What makes a home? It’s furniture, of course! But where do they come from? During the 1910s and 1920s when Singapore started seeing an increase in immigrant population, traditional furniture making began to take root. It was largely dominated by immigrant Chinese craftsmen who built and repaired a wide range of household furniture. The trade requires much patience and skill, and is therefore usually a family business where skills are passed down from generation to generation.

However, the number of such shops have dwindled due to high rent and the rise of contemporary furniture shops and warehouses. Delve deep into old treasures, lost and found, as we explore rattan stores, old furniture shops and antique corners that still stand the test of time.
